HOME CARE FOLLOWING MYRINGOTOMY AND TUBE SURGERY

Please follow these instructions to ensure a safe recovery.

ACTIVITY:

            -Rest today.

            -Resume activities tomorrow as tolerated.

DISCOMFORT:

-Minimal pain, if any, is expected.

-Take Tylenol appropriate for the patient’s weight and age.

-NOTIFY your doctor is severe pain is present.

 CARE OF THE EARS:

-Expect a small amount of pink-tinged, clear, odorless drainage.

-If red, bright pink or cloudy drainage is present, CALL YOUR DOCTOR.

-If prescribed, place the ear drops in the ears as directed for 3 to 7 days.  After insertion, most drops require a gentle pumping action with a finger on the tragus  which is the cartilage that protrudes in front of the ear canal.  This pushes the drops through the tube into the middle ear where they are intended to work.

-Save the drops for later use, if needed.

-DO NOT let water enter the ears:

1.      NO swimming without ear plugs

2.      Bathe or shower cautiously—ALWAYS place the ear plugs or use Vaseline coated cotton balls when bathing.

NOTIFY YOUR DOCTOR WITH ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:

-Fever over 101 degrees by mouth.

            -Excessive drainage from the ears.

            -Excessive pain from the ears.

  APPOINTMENTS:

-Call ______________________ to schedule a post-op appointment to see your doctor in 2 weeks.
